Discovering yellow

I've always been a great fan of yellow despite the fact that it does not suit my complexion. In fact wearing yellow makes me look like I'm dying of consumption which is sad really because yellow is such a bright and cheerful colour. As with all colours I don't look good in I try to steer clear of yellow, but its energy and radiance fascinates me.

yellow and emerald

I've recently taken some time off and went back to doing the things that make me happy: sewing and making jewellery. I decided this was really the time to push my boundaries and overcome the scare factor some colours evoke. So I decided to pull out my yellow beads and make something pretty with them.
Once I let go of the fear, the creative process was so spontaneous and fun and I came up with these two pairs of earrings:

colourful and happy
I've also been experimenting with other colours that used to scare me with surprizingly amazing results: next up the colour grey and a new dress!

  1. I am so glad you are spending time doing things that make you happy! Yellow is definitely a happy color. I think that's why small children never forget to put the sun into their paintings.

    1. Susan, that's such an interesting observation. It made me think back on the times I drew paintings as a kid and I tried to remember why I always drew the sun, because as you said I always did. I remember being told by my kindergarten teacher that the sun makes the day bright and warm. I also remember that I understood that in a childlike manner and drew the sun so that the rest of the items in the picture will be visible, so I drew my mum and our house and flowers in our garden and if there weren't any sun to make the painting bright and warm that my mum and the house and flowers would be dark and invisible. And after re-reading this reply I think it's sort of weird but kind of awesome too and it makes me think about the way the child's mind works and the simplicity of understanding such difficult concepts by grasping the essence and translating it in their childlike way.

  2. Great idea...best way to cheer up is to look at lovely colors, at least for me. xx

    1. This experiment also gave me the idea to incorporate more yellow into my wardrobe. Since I can't wear it near my face, I'm limited to accessories and it made me think that a pair of bright yellow opaque thights are just the thing!

  3. It's always a good thing to push our boundaries. Who knows what the results may be? Just look at your creativity! The gypsy in me would definitely wear those earrings!

    1. Sandy, you're absolutely right. Pushing boundaries is about being brave and being prepared to fail but mostly it's about having fun. At least for me. And I've noticed that when I'm really really having fun experimenting with new things that's when I usually end up with great results.

  4. Loved this :D I have the same "relationship" with yellow, complexion doesn't allow me to wear it, but I cheat with accessories!

  5. The yellow and emerald ones have needed a lot of handwork, all the detailing, the curving of the metal.
Both earrings would look great on a pretty face.
Does baby yellow work for you?

    1. Mette, the wire wrapping required a lot of time mostly because it's such a small earring frame and it's difficult to work and make small loops with big pliers. But I find jewellery making relaxing even despite this.
I haven't tried baby yellow yet, I think I could make it work if pairing it with baby blue. Not on its own though I think. Thanks for the idea!

  6. Congratulations on expanding your color horizons! Keep it up - your creations are lovely!
I have felt this way about 3 colors - yellow, orange, and pink. I decided a while back to really push myself to design with them - yellow and orange became my friends once I realized that it is all about the particular hues - I still don't particularly care for some of the more pale yellows in jewelry - but it was very freeing to 'face my fear' LOL Pink was more difficult - I am REALLY not a fan - but eventually, I came to see pinks in nearly everything - you just start to see how the light changes color when you look. I'm still not happy with most 'contrived' pinks - but am far more comfortable including it in my palettes now. I'm glad this kind of 'color aversion therapy' works so well!

    1. Perry hi and welcome to my blog :-) like you said, this colour therapy and expanding horizons is true magic. Since making the earrings I've been inspired to incorporate yellow into my sewing as well, which would have been inconceivable before.
