Bits of wisdom

Peggy Olsen from Mad Men:

I don't think anyone want's to be one of a hundred colours in a box.
When asked why she didn't participate in the lipstick sampling, Peggy unwittingly produces a slogan for the lipstick company. The striking realization being that the need to please (by conforming to the established norms)  is sometimes superseded by our innermost desire to be unique.

  2. Peggy is one of my favorite characters. She's so good at what she does, but such a complex person.

  3. Shirley: It seemed like a perfect way to start a Monday. Have a great week :-)

Une femme: The reason I admire Peggy is because she is at the forefront of a movement that will only later be given a name and a purpose. I think Peggy stands for a number of women of the era, standing up for themselves not so that they can be viewed as heroes and feminist by later generations. Unapologetically living their lives without a political movement to fall back on, but rather creating one. Making mistakes along the way. It takes real guts in my opinion.

  4. Once the show is done, I'm going to rent all the DVDs and take a month off work! haha. 'Til then, I'll just admire the images and quotes I see :)

  5. Ahhh Peggy! Such a cute vintage inspired outfit. And, I know what she means about individuality vs acceptance.

  6. Heidi: I think you're in serious danger of needing two months off, because once you've seen it, you'll want to see it again :-)

Vanessa: I think I could write a whole separate blog just on the topic of Mad Men costumography.

  7. Have never watched this programme the 50/60s were so blah to me....worn the clothes been there..leave it to the young'ens!!

coffeeaddict your explanation to une Femme about your reason for liking it.....brought back a book I read 'The Womens Room' by Marilyn French it put so much into perspective for my naive self...it still brings back some emotions...not sure why ( but that is what a good book/film should do.
Felt the same about the book to 'Kill a Mocking Bird' also the great film with Gregory Peck.

Whoops sorry gone off on a tangent! Ida

  8. Ida: Thanks for "going off a tangent" as you put it. These are my favourite kind of comments. As you know, I'm always looking for a constructive debate :-)
