Precious things/8 Tattoo

Today, nine years ago, I had my first (and only) tattoo done.

It was to celebrate my upcoming 21st birthday. Nine years later, I can definitely say, I don't regret it at all. This tattoo is of very personal as well as symbolic nature. It represents a marker in the passage of time, the coming of age and a life altering realization I had made at around that time regarding my struggle with my depression.

I felt uncomfortable sharing photos of the actual tattoo, instead I'm posting the photo of a T-shirt to which I transferred the copy of the tattoo. I went to great length to position the image as accurately as possible onto the T-shirt. And the actual tattoo is black.

  1. I like the design you have here. My sister has 3 tats, but I have none. I change my mind too often to commit to something as permanent as a tattoo. Also, I have a vivid memory of how they look on old flesh, from various uncles coming home from the war with them and then becoming old men. New tats are beautiful, though--the colorful sleeves sometimes real works of art.

  2. Charlotte: Thanks :-) I waited five whole years, before committing to this tattoo. I have given it a lot of thought and even considered how it will appear when I'm old. It was one of the reasons why I chose to have it on my lower back.

  3. Ana, if you have a tattoo, then you have it. The choice was your´s. Personally I am so against them. I associate them with seamen and jail guys ( as I have told this before ).
Every time I see a tattoo, I get so sad. Why oh why.
I know you must now be disappointed with me, but remember, I come from an older generation, and although I am ready to accept new ideas, this tattoo thing - although so common these days - is just too much for me.

  4. Mette: Believe me, I am not disappointed. I have had my share of shock and dismay with people approaching something so life altering in a casual way. Tattoos are very controversial and I accept that. I take great pride in the fact that I had a lengthy discussion on the topic with my parents beforehand, both mum and dad very firmly against tattoos in general as well as me getting one. But they respected my decision and I'm proud to say that I didn't sneak off to have a tattoo done, both my parents knew I desired to have one done and also the exact date when I finally did.
    Happy Sunday!
