Unisex fashion

Over the last couple of years, the fashion world went crazy for the "boyfriend trend": the boyfriend jeans, oversized cardigans, cuffed jackets and brogues became quite trendy and could be spotted on many women around the Globe. Though if truth be told it suited very few.
Such is, in my opinion the true value of many trends: they seldom last quite because the style is unsuitable for 90% of the population and looks funny, is uncomfortable or just plain odd.

I never cared for the boyfriend trend  and in all the years we've been together I've seldom "stolen" garments from Mr. C. Last Saturday we went for a bit of autumn shopping and I found this medium weight jersey hoodie. Bliss! We got one for Mr. C and I immediately wanted one of my own, but thought: "Naah, not going to fall for it!"
As we were nearing the register, I started wincing and finally went back for one more hoodie. and it's a decision I won't regret. It's so soft and just the perfect weight. Looks great paired with dark wash jeans and ballet flats for a casual look.

As always, I'm a sucker for details. Bound buttonholes provide a classy touch to an otherwise casual garment.

What's your take on the boyfriend trend or trends in general? In favor or against?

  1. Great pullover, and I love the name, "Marc O'Polo!" Boyfriend styles generally don't work on me, but I do love the occasional masculine touch like brogues or moto boots, or a schoolboy bag.

    1. Susan, Marc O'Polo is a brand name. As a rule, I don't buy clothes with wisibll logos, but this one seemed unobtrusive enough.

  2. Bound buttonholes! I haven't seen that in forever. Very special. I fell for boyfriend cardigans a couple of years ago, but that's about it. No brogues. Prefer the more feminine take. I think you did VERY well with your hoodie! Nice looking fabric. I do try to stay away from trends that come and go. Sticking to the basics and classics, I can wear my stuff forever. Spicing up in the trend category is with accessories. Nice post!

  3. Ah, bound buttonholes, my favorite. The hoodie looks great.

Bill Cunningham had a recent piece in the NY Times on the trend towards androgyny in fashion:

I love menswear but it's not a good look for me. At least I can admire it on my stylish husband :). Pseu's idea of brogues is one I've thought of as well.

  4. I absolutely love menswear, but I can't wear it. It just looks awful on me. I did go through a "boyfriend" phase back in the late 80s & early 90s, but I have to admit that even then, it wasn't a great look on me.

But I do love the fabrics and colors of menswear. For example, your hoodie-- it looks incredibly comfy and also durable.

  5. I have to hold my hand up,guilty as found!! I love wearing HB's large cosy jumpers when it is freezing cold.
I have also worn his white evening shirts with jeans when younger.

Do not like brogues on women horrid fashion.

The navy/white with jeans/flats will look simple chic on you. Ida

  6. Though I h a t e the word trend, it is difficult to buy clothes these days without a bit of " trend/ updating " in them. I do like some oversized clothes, depending what it is, but not men´s clothes, there is a difference in the design.
You made a good deal. Marc O´Polo is a good brand. I wear it´s T-shirts 365 really! The price/quality is excellent.
Oh, I´d like to see you two in your hoodies : )!

    1. Mette, as soon as there's an opportunity, we'll probably get a picture of the two of us in matching hoodies all cutesy and over the top in the cheesy department!
Thanks for the tip on the Marc O'Polo T-shirts, I've been trying to find a decent bargain for some basic items such as T-shirts and jeans that last long, don't fray and are comfortable.

  7. Years ago I would borrow boyfriends things, or we occasionally would go matching.. Groan! These days I 'borrow' husbands things but usually only for studio or garden. They are comfy though and I say do what makes you happy and relaxed! It's a very cute top.

    1. Jenni, I like to borrow oversized T-shirts that have been worn and washed into a soft perfection. The best thing for sleeping in!
