Bits of wisdom

Beauty will save the world.

Fyodor Dostoevsky

I've often wondered which is that single, universal value that should stand above all others. As a law student I've always held a strong position that it must be the truth. And with it all other values are put into perspective and made meaningful.

Recent experience, growing up if you will, has taught me a valuable lesson: no matter how hard I try, truth is sadly still relative but more disappointing than that, some people choose not to accept it. Maybe Dostoevsky was right all along and beauty proves to be a more unifying concept?

So here's the most beautiful thing I have discovered this summer, a couple of young musicians that have managed to turn their passion for music into a thing of beauty and wonder.

  1. Very nice music indeed! Thoroughly enjoyed listening and watching these two very talented musicians.

I must agree that truth is the most important value above all others. Just because many don't live up to it in no way lessens its importance or our personal aspiration to live up to it.

Beauty. Ah, such an all encompassing word. Sadly, many think of it only in terms of physical or outward beauty. But as we know, beauty is everywhere, to to appreciated by the discerning among us.

Thank you for this very nice post.

  2. I'm with Dostoevsky on this one. Throughout my life, I've made many so-called "foolish" choices in favor of art and beauty, and not once have I regretted it.

  3. P.S. I saw a quote recently-- unfortunately I can't remember who said it-- but it was something to the effect of, "you can't have beauty without kindness". Kindness is something I value highly, and I do relate it to beauty. I think that may be why I feel so strongly about the saving power of beauty.

  4. Integrity is the most important thing to me,which I find is not something that is greatly valued today sadly.

I enjoyed listening to these gifted men,so natural and sincere.

While in London I stopped to listen to a young woman busking with a beautiful harp, her music in the middle of the city lifted you to a higher plane for a few magical moments BLISS.Ida

    1. The famous scene from A few good men comes to mind: "You can't handle the thruth..."
I'm tired of being surrounded by people who can't handle the truth :-)

  6. Wonderful musicians. Truth is pretty high on my list as well, but I put acceptance even higher, because the truth, whatever it is must be accepted, and above these two I put love and beauty, together, as two facets of the highest expression of our shared humanity.

    1. Susan, this is so wonderfully put. As you know acceptance is something I struggle with myself particularly when faced with uglyness and injustice of thw word so in that aspect I believe that beauty and love can save the world :-D
Wishing you a peaceful and sunny day!
