We've
become a society of superlatives: everything is wrapped in neat shiny
packages where something as mundane as a waitress serving tables at the
local diner becomes a highly skilled professional capable of maintaining
customer satisfaction while simultaneously organizing and managing food
preparation process i.e. grilling sandwich in a toaster while pouring
coffee?!
These days people don't miss any opportunities to brag about their accomplishments, special skills and achievements.
Today I went to get my teeth cleaned. Quite an unusual experience. The dentist went on and on how great my teeth were and how rare it was to see such even distribution of roots or something and no cavities especially counting in the fact that I hadn't seen a dentist in over a decade. But that's a whole different story. It took me ten minutes to realize this person wasn't exaggerating or trying to soothe my ego but he was genuinely astounded..
Should I be flattered by the fact that my teeth are perfect? I'd say that's pretty silly, because I had absolutely zero influence on the matter, I have only my parents to thank for good genes.
Tomorrow I will be attending a formal ceremony at my former Law school where I'll be awarded with a special plaque for an outstanding thesis. Yet another excellent opportunity for bragging. While I do understand that this is an immense honor and I'm certainly feeling proud and elated. On the other hand telling people about it has been difficult: no matter how I approach the subject it feels like bragging.
How do you feel about talking about your accomplishments?

Well, congratulations - going to the dentist is not one of my favorite things. I can understand how you feel - just tell your story - you can not control how others receive it - those who truly care for you will be just as elated - those who are on the fence will go whichever way they choose - you worked hard - share it!
ReplyDeleteHave a great day,
Kathy
Kathy I always feel so sorry for the dentists. Imagine having a job that makes people, uncomfortable even scared.
DeleteAnd I agree with everything you wrote.
Happy weekend!
The dentist story cracks me up! I think he was so happy to find someone with great teeth, he just couldn't help himself! You really do need to be proud of the award you are receiving, since it is a recognition of many hours of hard work on your part. Sending you hugs and cheers!!!
ReplyDeleteShirley, I suppose from his point of view it was like looking at a beautifully crafted engine or something. But still being complimented on the symmetry of my teeth roots is somewhat funny. On the other hand I feel so incredibly relieved that there hasn't been irreparable damage due to my negligence.
DeleteSending hugs and cheers back to you and your family :-)
See now, I saw the title of your blog and saw a toothbrush and I was expecting to hear about the other kind of plaque! That, of which you clearly have none - congrats. While having good teeth may not feel especially like an accomplishment, it is definitely something to be thankful for. I've had two root canals. They are most unpleasant!
ReplyDeleteDon't feel bad talking about the accomplishments and accolades you have worked hard to earn! So long as you speak enthusiastically and with humility, I don't think anyone would think ill of you.
Heidi, I've had the other kind of plaque removed, which was an interesting experience in itself. I thought it too funny to have my plaque removed and receive a whole different kind the following day ;-)
DeleteI've heard root canals are incredibly painful and unpleasant, my sympathies!
Congratulations for the plaque you are receiving! Such a fabulous thing, something you are entitled to and to be happy, joyful, merry and really, really proud of!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd what a delightful visit to the dentist. Congratulations for the genes!
Be happy, show your joy and be proud of yourself : )!
To answer your question - my accomplishments are my two beautiful, intelligent daughters and I am proud to be their mother, and I am not hiding my pride.
Mette, thanks and yes, I'm very happy and do feel pride in my achievement.
DeleteI finally figured out what's been really bothering me all this time: the reason why I've been so grumpy is the fact that when I told people about the topic of my thesis, I received a fair amount of side glances and disapproval, even scepticism i.e. what's the point of doing research over an obscure topic like this. Now everyone is rushing to congratulate me. It feels a bit wrong.
I wish you and your family a great weekend :-)
Leave the 'bragging' to your parents which they have every right to do.
ReplyDeleteYou have worked hard to achieve this plaque enjoy it,and share with good
friends.
You have obviously taken great care of your teeth +genes.Great teeth
happy smile.
'Don't hide your light under a bushel' Happy weekend. Ida
Ida, Mr. C took me to one of favourite restaurants yesterday and it was lovely. The maitre d' pampered us with pink champagne and great food. The perfect ending of a perfect day :-)
DeleteHappy weekend!
I love it when my dentist compliments my teeth, because of the continuity, which I find quite soothing. Going to the dentist is nerve racking, at its best. I know that whatever Fate gave me good teeth, it wasn't because I was better loved than those with lesser teeth. (Or lower brain function, or perfect hair, or facial beauty.)
ReplyDeleteAs to public awards, I find it only fun to share with very close friends and some peers. There is so much unspoken competition which can erupt over what should be good news. "Bragging" has a negative connotation, and when good news is perceived as bragging, it is on the receiver of the news, not you. I understand wanting to share good news, but sometimes it just isn't worth stepping into the minefield of competitiveness.
As far as dentists go, I've been extremely lucky because all of my dentists were kind and super nice people who were very good with patients. I like my new dentist too, his mild manners and kindness are so incredibly comforting :-)
DeleteBragging and wanting to share your accomplishments, as you say a very thin line.
Happy weekend!
Congratulations on your award! I think you should be very, very proud and don't worry about bragging. You are not a bragging kind of person. Everyone knows that.
ReplyDeleteSweet, sweet Susan! Thank you, you always know what to say :-D
